Unique House in Watamu
Fantastic Design, Unique Architecture, Stunning Location
Our personal review (visited 2011)
This house in Watamu is absolutely unique and definitely one of the most
beautiful ones I have seen. It is not the most luxurious or spacious villa,
but its architecture and design is fantastic and the view from all rooms is
sensational due to its open construction.
Towards the southern end of Watamu Beach, away from all the touristy places,
this house is nested in a wonderful dense forest by the beach. Even the last
few meters of the driveway does not reveal what to expect. In fact, it was
not until we climbed the first set of stairs to the open plan living area,
that our jaws dropped and our eyes filled with enthusiasm. No other house
offers such open and cheerful architecture as well as such an amazing 360°
view. It is as if the walls are non-existent and the entire house is simply
open. Everything is handmade, lots of coloured glass and ceramics decorate
the house, driftwood and other natural elements integrate seamlessly into
the white washed walls. Playful staircases and corridors lead from one
section to another, at times winding up in the center of the house,
sometimes like a bridge on the outside. Hundertwasser is probably the only
name that one could connect with the design of this house but even his work
is closer to average than this house.
The main tower consists of a kitchen, living/dining area and two bedrooms
sharing an outdoor bathroom with shower, sink and toilet, each with a
stunning view.
Up another flight of stairs, on the roof terrace, is a third
double-bed out in the open. It has a roof over it and can be closed off with
canvas to all sides if needed, but it is the place for those who wish to
sleep and experience "outdoor" living in the best possible manner.
From the lounge/dining area, a bridge provides access to another tower
that hosts a bedroom with it's own bathroom en-suite.
On the property, a path leads through dense indigenous forest down to a
fantastic beach of fine white sand.
This property is ideal for a small group of friends or a family with older
children. Although young children would definitely love this property, we
cannot suggest it due to safety concerns. The villa is definitely not
suitable for toddlers and children up to 6 years old. Children between 6 and
10 years may want supervision at all times.
